Pair of French Champlevé Enamel and Bronze Candlesticks / Urns on Stands
This pair of bronze urns features finely cast details and champlevé enamel decoration, characteristic of late 19th-century French metalwork. Each urn is adorned with a pair of scrolled handles that curve outward, terminating in stylized flourishes. A continuous band of champlevé enamel encircles the upper portion, featuring a floral motif in shades of blue, white, and red. The urns rest on stepped pedestals, supported by square bronze bases with further champlevé enamel panels on each side.
The urns have an ovoid form that tapers toward a slender stem and flared foot, which sits atop the square bases. The champlevé enamel is applied within recessed channels, creating a contrast against the dark patinated bronze. The scrolled handles are affixed at the shoulder, extending upward before curling inward. The rim of each urn is subtly flared, adding to the balanced proportions of the design. The bases are supported by small rounded feet, elevating the pieces.
French workshops in the late 19th century were known for their high-quality bronze and enamelwork, often inspired by earlier classical forms. Champlevé enamel, a technique involving the carving of recesses into the metal surface before filling them with enamel, was a hallmark of this period. These urns reflect the refined craftsmanship associated with the production of decorative objects for the European market during this time.
