19th C. Chinese Blue and White Covered Jar with Fu Lion Finial
19th C. Chinese Blue and White Covered Jar with Fu Lion Finial
This jar is decorated in underglaze blue on a white porcelain body, featuring a continuous floral design with scrolling foliage and large stylized blossoms. The slightly rounded body is flanked by two small applied handles in the form of pierced, stylized animal heads. A band of key fret encircles the shoulder, separating the floral decoration from the upper section, which features additional scrollwork and geometric motifs.
The domed lid is painted with a similar floral pattern and is surmounted by a sculptural fu lion finial, modeled with a raised head and curled tail. The interior is glazed, while the underside of the lid has small vent holes. The base is left unglazed around the foot rim, showing a smooth white paste with scattered black firing spots.
This jar reflects traditional Chinese blue and white porcelain techniques, with finely painted decoration and precise brushwork. The presence of a fu lion finial suggests an association with protection and auspicious symbolism. The form and design elements align with Qing dynasty ceramic production, particularly those inspired by Ming period floral motifs.
